Biographical Background

The firm’s founder, F. Jonathan Zusy, first moved to Colorado in 1971 to attend the University of Colorado in Boulder.  As an undergraduate he studied mathematics and the sciences, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1976.  For many years after graduating, he operated a general contracting and construction management company in the Boulder-Denver region. As a subcontractor, builder, and construction manager he participated in numerous residential and commercial building projects, including undertakings for single-family residences, apartment buildings and town homes, professional interior offices, historic renovations, warehouse conversions, restaurants, and retail shops.

Mr. Zusy attended McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, California, during the years 1981 through 1984, receiving his J.D. (juris doctor), and graduating with distinction, in June of 1984. He then moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, where he was admitted to the Indiana bar in October of 1984, and he has practiced law continuously in various state and federal courts since that time.

Mr. Zusy moved back to Colorado and established his residency in Durango on June 1, 2005, and was admitted as an attorney to the Colorado bar in December of 2005. On January 1, 2006, he formally opened his local law practice through the establishment of F. Jonathan Zusy & Associates, LLC, a Colorado limited liability company d/b/a ZUSY LAW OFFICES. Mr. Zusy was admitted as a lawyer to the bar of the State of New Mexico in April of 2006.

During his 20-plus years in private practice in Indiana, Mr. Zusy focused his legal practice in the areas of Real Estate Law, Business & Corporate Law, Banking, Lending & Finance, Construction Law, Securities Law, Bankruptcy Reorganization Law, Creditors’ Rights, General Civil, Commercial & Trial Practice, and Appellate Practice. From July 1999 through July 2005, Mr. Zusy served in-house as Vice President and General Counsel for International Medical Group, Inc., a health, medical and travel insurance management and administration firm that places insurance and administers claims throughout the United States, Europe, and on a world-wide basis.

Through his law firm and as an established attorney and lawyer in Durango, Colorado, Mr. Zusy has continued his practice in the general areas of real estate and business law described above, while also focusing attention on the law of Homeowners Associations (HOA's), Property Owners Associations (POA's), and other common interest communities. In addition to representing several such associations in Southwest Colorado, Mr. Zusy's current and/or prior clients have included local, national and multi-national corporations, real estate and business brokers, builders and construction management firms, land and subdivision developers, banks and mortgage companies, architects, mortgage brokers, surveyors, appraisers, auctioneers, property owners, general contractors and sub-contractors, majority and minority shareholders, insurance companies, hotel chains, manufacturers, service companies, and numerous other individuals, businessmen, entrepreneurs and small and large businesses of all types, covering a broad spectrum of industries.

Mr. Zusy has owned and/or currently owns real estate located in neighboring Archuleta and Montezuma Counties since 1997, and has been and/or remains a general member of and/or has served on the Design Review Committee for multiple homeowners' and property owner's Associations, including Elk Run Estates in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, and Elk Springs Ranch and Elk Stream Ranch, near Mancos, Colorado. In January of 2006 Mr. Zusy was selected by the Durango Area Association of Realtors® as an instructor to provide education and guidance to DAAR members with respect to the Colorado Common Interest Ownership Act (CCIOA), Colorado Senate Bill 05-100, an Act Concerning Increased Protection for Homeowners, and Colorado Senate Bill 06-89, An Act Concerning Common Interest Communities, and since that time has also offered arrangements for and has held numerous private and public consultations, seminars, workshops and educational forums for association governing board members, managers, and unit and property owners.

Mr. Zusy served on the La Plata County Citizens Budget Advisory Committee from January 2006 through May 2007, and served as a member on the La Plata County Fairgrounds/Event Center Task Force from March 2006 through May 2007.  Please also see Areas of Practice and Practice Philosophy.
